Watching Sherlock Holmes – The Blind Banker was surprising. The first shot is of the museum which focuses on the tea kettle, a deep blue one and the lady explaining about the Chinese Tea Ceremony. That shot was an iconic shot which remained with me for a long time. May be because when the world is totally obsessed over numbers and money, this girl in the museum had been there to protect the kettle and also finds pleasure in explaining the museum visitors about an ancient tradition related to Chinese Tea. Little offbeat yet surprising!!

It is not a widely known fact that the tea ceremony has been originated from confluence of the philosophies of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism.

China is pretty known for their tea culture. Tea in China was initially cultivated as a herbal medicine and it was used mostly within temples. Calming effects is the main reason why monks used tea. It is also to show humility and respect to nature.

What is the tea ceremony called?

It is called as He Jing Yi Zhen meaning peace,quiet, enjoyment and truth. Chinese people relate all these important things in human life to the Tea Ceremony.

The importance of the tea ceremony is not limited to personal experience, it is rather a social and traditional event in China.

Here are six important aspects of Chinese Tea Ceremony:

Attitude: The person who carries out the ceremony should be pleasant, elegant and should be confidant.

Selection of Tea: Aroma, taste, shape is the main criteria for selection. Also, if there is a story behind the type of tea and name then it is a cherry on the cake. 

Selection of water: Water should be light, pure and clean to avoid mingling of unnecessary chemicals in the brew .

Teaware: It is the most important part. One should be careful while choosing teaware. It should be such that the participants in the tea ceremony should be appreciative for the beauty and utility of the teaware.

Ambience: One can not have tea when it is chaotic around. The environment should be clean and ambient. Presence of an elegant as well as an intricate artwork is considered to be enhancing for the ceremony.

Technique: Gestures, hand movement, clothing are considered to be paramount while brewing tea. Chinese people believe that the ceremony needs to be complete in all these aspects.

As I travel back from my Chinese Tea Ceremony thoughts, I see my desk which is clean and tidy. I also have an elegant poster in front of me, I am dressed elegantly and have all that which needs to make a perfect brew. Further, I would like to indulge in some peace while sipping on my tea.
